COMMUNITCATE!

The ROAD TO ABILENE | Groupthink

A story by Jerry Harvey as told by the Reverend John H. Nichols

They were sitting around on the porch in Coleman, Texas. The temperature was 104 degrees, but the porch was shaded, and everyone was comfortable. Then, Jerry Harvey's father-in-law said, "Let's get in the car and go to Abilene and have dinner at the cafeteria." In the back of Jerry's mind a little voice said, "This is nuts. I don't want to travel 53 miles in the heat of summer in a 1958 Buick to have dinner in a lousy cafeteria." But Jerry's wife said, "It sounds like a great idea." And Jerry heard himself saying, "Sounds good to me. I hope your mother wants to go." And Jerry's mother said, "Of course I want to go." Four hours and 106 miles later, they returned. The heat had been brutal. Perspiration and dust stuck to their clothing and bodies. The food, as Jerry guessed, had been awful.

Later that evening Jerry said, quite dishonestly, "It was a great trip wasn't it." Nobody spoke. Finally, his mother in law said, "To tell the truth, I really didn't enjoy it much. I would rather have stayed home, and I wouldn't have gone at all if you hadn't pressured me into it." To which Jerry responded, "I didn't pressure you. I was happy here. I only went to make the rest of you happy." His wife said, "You and Dad and Mamma were the ones who wanted to go. I just wanted to make you happy." And his father in law said, "I never wanted to go to Abilene. I just thought you might be bored sitting at home with the rest of us."

So, they all made a 106 mile round trip in the God forsaken desert under furnace- like conditions to eat unpalatable food in a dingy cafeteria, a trip nobody had been looking forward to and nobody wanted to take. Ω

Birthday Flowers!

I get a strange knock on the door at around 9:30 Sunday morning. I walk to my door, slightly disgruntled, and open it to these:

Thank you SO much Stacey!

Happy Birthday to me! I LOVE FLOWERS!

On My Mind

Through the day my mind doesn't wander
It deliberately searches,
Seeking you to ponder.

With time to pause, you come to mind
Your smile, your voice
How you are kind.

I admire the positive, funny things you say,
Conversations,
Caring disclosures in your way.

When we meet, I drink you in
It's so timely
This could begin.

-Megan Rose

Surprise!

So, needless to say, since I was driving to class at 7:55...I was late. ha ha. I walked into class intending to sneak over to my seat when my teacher stopped talking, looked at me, and said, "Did you forget something Megan?" I thought, "CRAP!" I said, "Ha ha, um, uh...." Everyone laughed. My teacher said something about my birthday...she's Chinese...I'm not sure what she said. That's when I noticed the Costco muffins on everyone's desk. I had two on mine. Codi lit two candles for me and everyone sang.

I laughed and finally realized that Wei (my teacher) was conned into saying that to me. Codi, Jeanna and Patricia got me muffin's with candles! I also received a coupon from Codi for a one year subscription to a magazine of my choosing cleverly placed within a pickle card! ha ha. Finally, Patricia gave me Lindt truffle chocolates! YUM!

I have such good friends. My birthday is officially complete! THANKS GUYS! You made my day!

Dog

On my way to class this morning at 7:55....I almost hit a dog. It was very scary. I looked up from the radio and suddenly there was a HUGE dog in my lane. I said, "OH DOG!" and swiveled around him. I watched him as I went by. I honestly don't think he even noticed me. He didn't jump, speed up, or yelp as my car hugged the air against his side. I continued to watch him, worried he would get hit by a car behind me. Finally, he crossed the road and happily trotted off to chase cats and smell interesting things. What a life!
